Description from the seller

A very beautiful and authentic antique sampler, produced in the 19th century and clearly dated 1852. This object is entirely hand-embroidered in cross-stitch on a linen substrate and forms a wonderful example of traditional educational and decorative textile from this period.

Samplers were made in the 18th and 19th centuries as practice and display pieces, in which young girls recorded their skill in letters, numbers and embroidery stitches. At the same time they served as a lasting memory and as home decoration. This specimen is rich, carefully and evenly composed and testifies to a high level of craftsmanship.

The top depicts multiple alphabets in different fonts, supplemented with numbers, which is typical for classical samplers. Below unfolds a symmetrical composition with traditional motifs such as:
• Flower and plant motifs
• Birds
• Jugs and vases
• The Tree of Life
• Geometric and floral border decorations

This symbolism, among other things, stands for growth, homeliness, nature and continuity and is characteristic of North European and Dutch samplers from the 19th century.

The year 1852 is clearly incorporated into the embroidery and confirms the antiquity and authenticity of the piece. The sampler is unsigned, which is very common for this type of work and period.

Material and technique
• Substrate: Linen
• Embroidery technique: Cross-stitch
• Fully handmade
• Tight and consistent stitchwork

The sampler is in good antique condition. The linen shows light aging discoloration and a few small yellow stains, appropriate for an object of this age. The embroidery itself is well intact, clearly legible and shows no significant damage. These signs of aging contribute to the authenticity of the piece.

The sampler is beautifully and suitably framed in a gold-colored frame (dated later). The frame shows slight signs of use and aging, but aesthetically it harmonizes well with the textile and provides a calm and classic presentation. The object is thus ready to hang.

• Technique: Hand-embroidered (cross-stitch)
