Description from the seller
Chokwe whistle – Democratic Republic of the Congo
Rare anthropomorphic Chokwe whistle, carved with sobriety and efficiency, revealing a formal mastery typical of ritual productions from this cultural area. The finely modeled head features balanced and expressive traits, a structured hairstyle, a calm gaze and a mouth discreetly open, conveying an intention more symbolic than narrative.
The body, deliberately reduced to a compact volume, incorporates the whistle’s lateral openings, perfectly integrated into the composition, without breaking the overall harmony. This economy of means gives the object a clearly evident sculptural force, highly appreciated by collectors sensitive to restrained abstraction.
This type of whistle was used in ritual or ceremonial contexts, serving to mark a rhythm, signal a presence, or accompany certain initiation sequences. The aged patina, even and deep, testifies to genuine and prolonged use. An object at once discreet and powerful, representative of the authentic Chokwe aesthetic.
