Description from the seller

Kindombolo Mask (Ndombolo) – Pende – Democratic Republic of the Congo

Dear fellow collector, truly take in the measure of this Pende Kindombolo mask, also called Ndombolo, a feared and essential figure of Pende ritual theater, often rightly nicknamed the "troublemaker", the Trouble Maker.

This mask is not decorative; it is active, transgressive, violent in its function as in its appearance. During the ceremonies, the bearer appears in the village to provoke disorder, sow fear, disrupt the established rules, and embody social tensions. It dashes about, it threatens, it deliberately disturbs. Accounts say that these masks could be struck by sticks, machetes, or various objects by the villagers themselves, in a collective staging where symbolic violence participates in the ritual catharsis.

The face presents a remarkable architectural construction, almost brutal, where angular volumes and broken planes dominate. The massive brow arches, the strong nose, and the reduced mouth reinforce the authoritarian and destabilizing expression of the mask. The facial perforations participate in the wearer's breathing but also enhance the visual tension, giving the whole an almost mechanical, relentless aspect.

The patina is deeply marked by ritual use, dark, irregular, and laden with traces of impact, wear, and handling. It testifies to an object that has lived, circulated, confronted the crowd and the violent gestures that were an integral part of its function. Nothing here is feigned or reconstructed.

A rare, important mask, with undeniable presence, emblematic of the Pende ritual genius and of this unique capacity of African art to materialize chaos in order to restore social order more effectively.
