Vintage Japanese Key Chains & Travel Pass Souvenir Set, 35 items from Japan dating circa 1975–1995, comprising retro keychains and wooden travel passes in good condition with signs of aging.
Description from the seller
This is a large and visually rich collection of approximately 35 Japanese retro souvenir keychains and wooden travel passes (tsūkō-tegata / 通行手形), dating from the late Shōwa to early Heisei period (circa 1975–1995). The lot represents a colorful snapshot of postwar Japanese tourism culture, when local landmarks, temples, hot springs, scenic routes, and transportation networks were commemorated through small collectible objects.
The keychains are made from a wide range of materials, including brass, copper, aluminum, zinc alloy, enamel, plastic, wood, and composite metals. Many feature iconic motifs such as temples and pagodas (e.g., Nara, Kyoto), regional maps (Echigo Road), transportation themes (Shinkansen, trains, airplanes), popular destinations (Hawaii, Tokyo Tower), and traditional symbols such as the Daruma, Kannon, and lucky charms. Several pieces include moving parts, spinning medallions, bells, or layered metal elements, adding tactile and playful qualities typical of mid-to-late 20th century souvenirs.
A distinctive part of this set consists of wooden “travel passes” (通行手形), rectangular wooden plaques traditionally modeled after historical toll-gate permits. These bear hand-brushed calligraphy and red seals for various locations such as Nikkō (日光), Nikkō Tōshōgū (日光東照宮), Echigo Road (越後路), and other regional sites. Some are painted with colorful maps or landmark illustrations, reflecting the craftsmanship and regional pride of local souvenir makers.
The overall condition is consistent with age and use, showing patina, surface wear, and light tarnishing that add authentic character rather than detracting from the charm. Together, these pieces form an engaging collection for enthusiasts of Japanese vintage memorabilia, travel history, and mid-century design.
