Small Fang Protection Figurine
Wood and brass
155mm high
Weight 75 g

The glowing, metal-inlaid eyes of this figure suggest the ability to peer beyond the earthly realm. These figures symbolically summon the ancestors. The sculptures may reflect notions of death and rebirth by pairing childlike features—such as a high, domed forehead and shortened limbs—with more mature attributes. Normally, these reliquary figures could also be placed in and around the houses of the large extended family for protection. Such portable reliquaries were an innovation developed to meet the needs of a wandering community, as villages regularly relocated due to the uncertainties of the challenging forest environment.
