Description from the seller
19th-century French nightstand with a marble top – circa 1900s
Elegant and authentic 19th-century nightstand (chevet), crafted at the end of the 20th century. This type of furniture was traditionally placed beside the bed in French and Western European bedrooms and served for storing personal belongings, a candle, or a basin.
The cabinet stands on slender, turned legs and is finished in wood with refined details, including a drawer above and a door below. The whole is crowned by an original marble top, a luxurious and practical addition that is characteristic of this period. The brass knobs and the paneling complement the Louis XVI / neoclassical style, which was very popular in the late 19th century.
History
In the 19th century, a great deal of attention was paid to both functionality and aesthetics in interior design. A nightstand like this was handcrafted and formed a staple part of the bedroom furnishings of the well-to-do bourgeoisie. The marble top protected the furniture from moisture and heat, while its slender design contributed to an elegant appearance without taking up much space.
Condition
• The cabinet, given its age, is in very good antique condition
• Only light signs of use and aging, appropriate for a 19th-century piece of furniture
The marble top is in good condition; there is a light ring mark in the marble, but it is not intrusive and does not detract from the overall appearance.
• Original hardware and original construction, fully authentic
A stylish and characterful antique piece of furniture, ideal as a nightstand, side table, or decorative accent in a classic or eclectic interior.
