Bob Mizer devoted 48 years to photography and cinema for his association of athletic models, and 41 years to the publication of Physique Pictorial, the first gay bodybuilding magazine in the United States. His diaries, kept since the age of eight, reveal his openly acknowledged homosexuality from the end of his adolescence. Yet, until age 42, he lived and worked in his mother's boarding house in Los Angeles, where a strict ethic prevented him from fully expressing his fantasies. For 24 years, he worked in black and white and never photographed a man entirely nude. But after his mother's death in 1964, Mizer created a universe devoted to the pleasures of masculine flesh, photographing men entirely naked in explicit poses and in saturated psychedelic colors.
