Description from the seller
The Afghan Sumak Kilim is a hand-woven tribal rug, produced mainly in the northern regions of Afghanistan. It is distinguished by the Sumak technique, a complex weaving in which the warp threads are wrapped around the weft rather than simply interlaced: this gives the rug a thicker and more durable structure than the traditional flat kilim, but without reaching the thickness of a knotted rug.
From an aesthetic standpoint, Afghan sumak features bold, repetitive geometric motifs, often symbolic, tied to nomadic culture (diamonds, stars, comb-like or eye motifs). The colors are rich and natural: dominated by rust red, burgundy, indigo, midnight blue, brown, ivory, and black accents, historically derived from plant-based dyes.
The back of the rug reveals the typical weave with slightly hanging threads, characteristic of the sumak technique, while the front is dense, warm, and pleasant to the touch. Precisely because of this solidity, the Afghan sumak kilim is suitable both as a floor rug and as a decorative tapestry.
Overall, it is a handcrafted piece that combines functionality, craftsmanship, and a strong ethnic identity, highly valued in contemporary interior design for its ability to bring character and authenticity to spaces.
