AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Small ceramic vase with a geometric pattern.
Greece, 450 to 400 BCE.

Beautiful small deep cup of fine ceramic, wheel-thrown, with a slightly flared wall and a thickened rim, resting on a small, clearly marked annular foot. The interior is entirely coated with a deep black glaze, now slightly matte from use and time, revealing the concentric marks of the wheel at the bottom of the basin.

The exterior features a brown‑black painted decoration on a light earthen background, arranged in horizontally delineated registers. The main register is adorned with a continuous wavy frieze, rhythmically punctuated by small motifs in the shape of stylized hearts, framed by parallel lines. Above it, a band punctuated by regular roundels emphasizes the transition toward the lip. The lower part of the body is animated by a frieze of hanging triangles, giving the whole a graphic balance characteristic of Greek productions with late geometric decoration.
The backdrop, kept in reserve, bears painted concentric circles centered on the frame’s center—a typical detail of a carefully produced shoot.

Condition status
Very good overall condition. A small, old repair at the lip and a discreet patch, perfectly stabilized and barely visible, not affecting either the readability of the decoration or the harmony of the form.

Dimensions :
Height: 8.5 cm
Diameter: 15 cm

Provenance
Belgian private collection of Mrs. J. Z., which has been part of the family patrimony for more than fifty years.
