Monumental solid wood sideboard from late Qing/early Republic China, dating ca. 1900–1910, likely Chinese elm, with traditional red lacquer, measuring 276 × 54 × 92 cm and weighing 100 kg, in good structural condition with age-related wear.
Description from the seller
China, late 19th – early 20th century (late Qing / early Republic)
Exceptional monumental low sideboard in solid wood (probably Chinese elm—yumu), finished with traditional red lacquer with a deep, authentic patina. With its rare dimensions and proven institutional use, this piece stands out as a museum-grade collectible.
Major element: the interior of the piece of furniture (back, sides and compartments) is almost entirely covered with handwritten ink inscriptions, corresponding to regulations and administrative annotations related to collective management (rice reserves, units of measurement, distinction public/private). The shelves have been placed over these writings, a testament to real and prolonged use.
At the back, the presence of an old red wax seal affixed directly to the wood corresponds to an administrative control seal (validation, sealing or inventory), a rare detail on furniture.
Dating & authenticity: traditional construction, original hardware, preserved antique patina, no major restorations.
Dimensions : 276 × 54 × 92 cm.
Condition: very good structural condition, age-related wear consistent with use.
Single piece, probably originating from a temple, public granary, guild, or local administration.
