Rare Collection of 5 Finnish Military Achievement Plaques (1968-1970) – PohmTR Artillery Regiment & Sport Federation
Description
An exceptional and well-preserved set of five Finnish military "Award Plaques" (Puolustusvoimat) dating from the late 1960s to early 1970s. This collection is unique because it includes the original typed identification cards, providing a rare level of provenance and historical context.
Historical Significance:
The plaques represent the elite physical training standards of the Finnish Defense Forces during the Cold War era. Most pieces are linked to the PohmTR (Pohjanmaan Tykistörykmentti), the Ostrobothnia Artillery Regiment, a prestigious unit with a long history.
Included in this lot:
Gold-Plated Championship Plaque (1968): Awarded for 1st Place (I p) in the "Kollaa Cross-Country Competition". Recipient: Corporal (Alik.) P. Tyrväinen. Includes handwritten notes on the reverse confirming a 30km ski race in Imatra on Feb 23, 1968.
Silver-Finish Plaque (1970): Awarded for 2nd Place (Second Prize) in Biathlon (Ampumahiihto), Conscript Series, PohmTR Regiment.
Bronze-Finish Plaque (1970): Awarded for 3rd Place (III Prize) in Cross-Country Skiing, PohmTR Regiment.
Gold-Finish Course Plaque (1969): Awarded for 1st Place in Physical Training for the Fire Position Line Course 3/69. Recipient: Student (Opp.) R. J. Remes, RAuK / PohmTR.
Finnish Military Sport Federation Plaque: Featuring the iconic "S" and sun logo, manufactured by the renowned Finnish trophy maker Palkintotukku.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition with original blue vinyl presentation folders. The gold and silver washes remain vibrant. Handwritten military notations on the reverse of the main plaque add significant "story" value for collectors of Finnish militaria.
Key Names for Research:
Unit: PohmTR (Ostrobothnia Artillery Regiment).
Personnel: Alik. P. Tyrväinen & Opp. R. J. Remes.
Location: Imatra / Kollaa.
Historical Background: The PohmTR Regiment (Pohjanmaan Tykistörykmentti)
To add value to this lot, it is essential to understand the prestige of the unit involved. The Pohjanmaan Tykistörykmentti (PohmTR), or the Ostrobothnia Artillery Regiment, was one of the cornerstones of Finnish coastal and land defense during the Cold War.
Elite Standards: During the late 1960s and 70s, the Finnish Defense Forces placed immense pressure on physical fitness and winter warfare skills (skiing and biathlon) to ensure readiness against potential threats. These plaques represent the peak of that military-athletic culture.
The Kollaa Connection: One plaque mentions the "Kollaa" competition. Kollaa is a legendary location in Finnish military history, known for the "Kollaa holds" spirit during the Winter War. Winning a 1st place plaque in a competition named after this battlefield carried significant prestige within the regiment.
Artillery Tradition: As an artillery unit, PohmTR required precise coordination and high physical endurance, qualities reflected in the "Fire Position Line" (Tuliasemalinja) award included in this collection.
This set is not just a group of awards; it is a time capsule of the Cold War Finnish military spirit, meticulously documented with the names of the men who served on the front lines of Northern Europe’s defense.
