Description from the seller
This door is a magnificent exemplar of Spanish Baroque in the full bloom of the Golden Century, a period in which the arts flourished intensely, even in architectural and furniture elements like this. Carved in solid wood, the door retains part of its original polychromy in green tones, which adds historical and aesthetic value, since polychromy was a technique widely used to visually enrich wooden surfaces in altarpieces, doors, and liturgical furniture.
The design presents a sober structure but with decorative details that reflect the Baroque taste for theatricality and ornament. The upper gable-shaped finish and the painted arch suggest architectural intention, as if the door formed part of a larger ensemble, possibly linked to a tabernacle, a chapel, or liturgical furniture. The presence of the original hinges, forged in iron, reinforces its authenticity and state of conservation, something quite uncommon in pieces of this age.
The surface shows signs of natural wear, with cracks and patina that speak of the passage of time, but also of its resilience. The green polychromy, although partially lost, allows appreciation of the original technique, probably applied over a stucco base and mineral pigments.
This type of doors not only served a practical function but were also vehicles for symbolic and spiritual expression, integrated into spaces where art served devotion. Its current conservation makes it a valuable piece for collectors, restorers, or scholars of Baroque sacred art.
If you're interested, I can help you explore restoration methods respectful of its original technique or identify its possible provenance within the regional schools of Spanish Baroque.
Certified shipping and proper packaging.
