A single Latin, anonymous-authored document titled “Document,” 35 pages, dating to 1443, in good condition, presented as an official notarised copy of earlier legal acts.
Description from the seller
1. The nature of the document
This is a 'Compulsoire et Collation'. It is an official, notarized copy of much older legal acts that were taken from the registers to serve as evidence in a new trial.
The original deed (1434)
The document relies on an arbitral award and a will dated May 15, 1434. At that time:
The lord Pierre de Montbrun demanded payment of debts from the Camboulan community.
The dispute concerned an annual annuity of 15 Cahors livres that was no longer being paid.
Specific rights were at stake, notably fishing in the Lot River (flumine Olti) and the dues related to a mill.
3. The parties involved
The document mentions several figures of authority and local families:
Nobility: there one can find the names of Mathurin de Cardaillac, lord of Cardaillac, and of the Montbrun family.
The inhabitants: The action targeted the consuls (the municipal magistrates of the time) and the inhabitants of Camboulan.
The subsequent holder: At the time of the copy (the more recent one), the document was held by Pierre Griffon, a farm labourer living on the Causse de Camboulan.
4. The historical stakes
The collection of these pages shows the persistent struggle between the lords and the villagers for control of local resources:
The sampling of wheat measures (cestaria frumenti).
Water and land use on the Causse.
