Description from the seller
Vintage American Mah-Jongg set, dating from the 1960s, kept in excellent condition.
The lot is presented as New Old Stock (NOS): there are no signs of use, the tiles are still packaged and the condition is consistent with prolonged storage in a warehouse. The completeness of the components and the overall state suggest careful handling from the outset.
It is the American variant of Mah Jong, spread in the United States after World War II, distinguished from the traditional Chinese version by the presence of Joker tiles, Arabic numerals, dice, and a wind indicator.
The set is complete and includes:
• complete set of Mah-Jongg tiles, including Jokers
• original manual in English: “Directions of Playing Mah-Jongg – Chinese Game of Four Winds”
• original dice
• wind indicator
• original hard briefcase with handle
The tiles are made of thermosetting plastic, a material widely used in high-quality American sets of the era for its resistance, dimensional stability, and durability.
⸻
Origin
The lot originates from the warehouse stock of a historic Italian retailer near Florence, recently closed. The business, active for several decades, specialized in the sale of Oriental objects and Asian handicrafts, with supplies from Asia throughout the course of the 20th century. This provenance is consistent with an acquisition dating back in time and with the excellent condition of the set.
⸻
Conditions
• New Old Stock, unused
Complete set
• Original components
• Very good condition, in keeping with the period
A lot of interest for collectors of vintage board games, enthusiasts of American Mah-Jongg, and for collections dedicated to 20th‑century gaming culture.
