Andiron - Cast iron

Pair of antique cast-iron andirons, probably 19th century, depicting busts of women, sometimes identified as Alsatian women or the figure of Marianne.

These objects are designed to hold the firewood elevated in a fireplace, allowing better airflow for a more efficient fire. The andirons are cast iron and feature distinctive sculptural details at the bust level. The figures wear braids and traditional headdresses. They are dark in color and show a patina due to age and use.
