Wim Wenders
PARCO Publishing/1994/Japanese/190*125*15
Once / Once..." is a collection of photographs by Wim Wenders, a well-known German film director and photographer. Wenders is known as a versatile artist who also works in photography, painting, and writing as a creative source for film production. He is a Japanophile who has visited many parts of the world to select filming locations, and has frequently come to Japan as well. He is a great admirer of Yasujiro Ozu, and in 2009 published “Journey to Onomichi,” a collection of his photographs that pays homage to Japan and Ozu. This book is a photo essay in which Wenders describes his experiences in the past with various countries and people through text and photographs. Each story begins with “Once upon a time,” and is told through a series of several photographs that evoke memories of that time. At the beginning of the book, Wenders' thoughts on “photography” are described. At least for me, taking pictures gradually came to mean 'discovering stories. (The story is not yet 'born. (omission) The story is not yet ‘born,’ but it may eventually appear in front of those who are willing to listen with their eyes.
