French commemorative gilded spelter single-arm table candlestick dating to 1895, with a dragon/wyvern motif and Beauvais inscriptions.
Description from the seller
French commemorative candlestick in gilded spelter – Beauvais 1895 – Dragon / Wyvern
Description
Elegant single-arm table candlestick of French production, late 19th century, made in gilded spelter (régule) with a dragon/wyvern figure, a subject typical of the neo-Gothic aesthetic and late Napoléon III.
The object bears original inscriptions cast in the metal, which clearly attest its commemorative purpose and dating:
Maison L. Martin
Dunoyer Brothers – Beauvais
Souvenir of the Enlargements – 1895
It is, therefore, a local civic souvenir, produced to mark Beauvais' urban/administrative expansions in 1895.
The name Dunoyer Frères is documented as an important commercial enterprise (“Grands Magasins de Nouveautés”) active in Beauvais between the late 19th and early 20th century.
The casting exhibits the typical characteristics of antique gilded spelter: good-quality detailing, a slightly porous surface, and original gilding with patina and wear consistent with its age.
The mounting is original, with vintage screws visible on the underside.
Condition: good, with normal wear to the gilding and oxidation compatible with age; no breakage or obvious restoration.
Era: 1895
Material: gold-plated spelter (regule)
Origin: Beauvais, France
A decorative and collectible item of local historical interest, rare due to the engraved date and the identifying inscriptions.
