Description from the seller
Native Sulfur on Fluorescent Aragonite Matrix – Cozzo Disi Mine, Sicily, Italy
This outstanding specimen features vivid, lemon-yellow native sulfur crystals from the historic Cozzo Disi sulfur mine in Sicily. The sulfur occurs in sharp, translucent to semi-translucent crystals with an intense natural color and excellent luster, forming a striking and highly aesthetic composition.
A key visual highlight of this piece is the dramatic contrast between the bright sulfur and the dark matrix, composed of bituminous limestone and marl typical of the Cozzo Disi deposit. Some sulfur crystals show clear bituminous impregnation, giving them slightly darker zones and adding depth and geological character to the specimen.
Under ultraviolet light, the associated aragonite fluoresces, creating a remarkable interplay between the glowing aragonite and the deep black matrix, while the sulfur remains visually dominant. This contrast between fluorescence, intense yellow sulfur, and dark host rock makes the specimen exceptionally dynamic and visually captivating.
Overall, this is an extremely beautiful and display-worthy piece, combining classic Cozzo Disi sulfur aesthetics with strong color contrast, fluorescence, and clear evidence of the unique sulfur–bitumen geological environment that made this locality world-famous.
