Tozo Nagata's Hiroshima - 1960, a 1st edition Japanese softback photography book of 95 pages, published by Patoria Shoten in 1960, in fair condition.
Description from the seller
This rare photobook, titled Hiroshima 1960, is the work of Tozo Nagata, an amateur photographer who felt a moral obligation to document the lives of atomic bomb survivors (Hibakusha) when he felt professional photographers were not doing enough.
Nagata, who worked for the Mainichi Shimbun in Osaka, spent his holidays traveling to Hiroshima to capture these images.
Key Features:
Historical Significance: Published in 1960, exactly 15 years after the bombing, the book documents the ongoing physical and psychological struggles of survivors.
It focuses on eight different families/individuals—including a teacher, an office worker, and a fisherman—showing how they navigated daily life, poverty, and disability.
Artistic Merit: Despite Nagata’s "amateur" status, the photography is exceptionally powerful and intimate.
His work is recognized for its technical skill and its ability to capture the quiet, human dignity of its subjects.
Prestige: This work is featured in the definitive reference volume "The Japanese Photobook 1912–1990" (by Kaneko Ryuichi and Ivan Vartanian), marking it as a significant piece of Japanese photographic history.
Size: 25.6 x 18.3 cm
Weight: 148 grams
