Description from the seller
Since the late nineties, when he first began making drawings and paintings, Michaël Borremans has created an extraordinary body of work that has attracted international attention. The diverse spaces he imagines in his paintings, drawings, sculptures, and films are united by a creepy sense of displacement and a often unsettling beauty. Borremans’ works in all media, executed in complex color palettes and with refined techniques, embrace a rich heritage of artistic predecessors, but remain firmly anchored in the present. This publication presents more than 100 works that the artist has created in a 14-year period across all media, including many works that have not previously been reproduced in books or catalogs, and offers the most complete overview of Borremans’ oeuvre to date. The contributions include a concise and incisive overview of Borremans’ practice; an revealing, in-depth interview between the book’s principal author, Jeffrey Grove, and the artist, in which the process, influences, and philosophical and critical issues are discussed; and more than 50 individual contributions and mini-essays on individual works in the artist’s oeuvre by leading writers, curators, filmmakers, and musicians. Michaël Borremans: As Sweet As It Gets, described by the artist as “the mother of all Borremans books,” was published to accompany a major retrospective exhibition.
