Estimated period ca. 1900–1915; chrome-plated metal pocket watch chain by Bengel from Idar Oberstein, in Jugendstil style, with two decorated frames set with faceted purple glass stones, length 26.5 cm, in very good used condition.
Description from the seller
From the Art Nouveau period, possibly by Jacob Bengel, a chrome-plated metal pocket watch chain with large, carved jasseron links and decorated with two frames set with cut purple glass stones. Made around 1900–15 in Idar Oberstein, Germany.
From a forgotten inventory of a jewelry store in Idar Oberstein, Germany.
Dimensions: (chain) 26.5 cm L. x 0.5 cm W.
Frame with purple stone 3.5 cm L x 1.5 cm W.
Spring clasp, size: 1.5 cm diameter.
The watch and chain are in good used condition.
Jakob Bengel began making watch chains in his factory in Idar Oberstein, Germany, in 1873.
The watch chains were mostly made of chrome-plated metal or brass but were never signed with Bengel's name, as they were frequently exported internationally to other countries in Europe. They were engraved, like this chain, on the last link with 'Germany'.
It was during the Art Deco period that Jakob Bengel sought new materials and inspiration to produce costume jewelry.
Inspired by the French Avant-Garde and other fashion trendsetters like Coco Chanel, Jakob Bengel then began producing experimental 'custom' jewelry.
The pieces, cataloged from 1924 to 1939, combined brass and chrome with geometric shapes made of colored galalith, a semi-synthetic plastic that resembles bakelite.
