Rare Neapolitan glazed earthenware soup tureen from Naples, dating to circa 1800–1850, attributed to Giustiniani or Del Vecchio, with sculptural goat-head handles and a domed lid, white glaze with crackle, on a turned foot, dimensions 33 × 29 × 24 cm.
Description from the seller
Important Neapolitan glazed earthenware soup tureen, Naples, early 19th century
Rare and elegant white-glazed earthenware soup tureen, produced in Naples and attributed to the historic Giustiniani or Del Vecchio manufactories, active in Naples from the late 18th to the early 19th century.
The piece stands out for the substantial sculptural handles shaped as goat heads, a decorative element strongly emblematic of Neapolitan Neoclassical production, inspired by archaeological repertoire and the antiquarian taste then dominant. The solemn, well-proportioned form, set on a turned foot, is completed by a hemispherical lid surmounted by a molded finial, which gives additional dynamism and balance to the whole.
The surface is coated with a compact, bright white glaze, characterized by a natural and widespread glaze crackle from firing, typical of high-quality earthenware of the period. The decoration is intentionally entrusted to the purity of form and to the plasticity of the sculptural elements, in line with the refined, cultivated taste of 19th-century patrons.
The absence of marks is entirely consistent with this production type: many large Neapolitan tureens intended for important services do not bear manufacturer marks, but are today recognizable by style, materials, and decorative solutions.
A piece of great stage presence, ideal both as a central element on a sideboard or table, and as a collectible for connoisseurs of historic Neapolitan ceramics.
Overall, very good and sturdy. A small glaze defect on the lid is noted, visible in the photos, which in no way compromises the viewing, solidity, or aesthetic harmony of the object. Normal signs of time and light wear compatible with the period.
