Description from the seller
Interesting and colorful icon of Joris the Dragon-Slayer, against a golden background and the bright green of the landscape, with a blue border.
According to tradition, Saint George was born in the 3rd century in Cappadocia. After the death of his father, who was murdered for his Christian faith, he grew up in Palestine. As an adult, George served in the Roman army under Emperor Diocletian and rose to the command of elite troops through his bravery and sharp wits. When he refused to participate in the persecution of Christians and spoke out against it openly, he was sentenced to death. Despite severe torture, he remained steadfast in his faith. According to tradition, this led to conversions among the people, before he was beheaded on 23 April 303.
Centuries later, in the Middle Ages, the famous legend of St. George and the Dragon arose, known from the Golden Legend. In this tale, St. George saves a princess and a city by slaying a dragon. Afterwards the people convert to Christianity. The dragon stands for evil, fear, and heathenism that are overcome by faith and courage.
On some icons, on the back of Saint George's horse, a small boy can be seen with a pouring jug. This refers to another legend in which Saint George frees a Christian boy from slavery. Thus the icon depicts not only a struggle, but also salvation and mercy.
From the time of the Crusades, Saint George grew into a beloved knight-saint and patron saint of soldiers. Therefore he is often depicted dynamically: on horseback, with a lance or sword, as a symbol of courage, faith, and the triumph of good over evil.
The icon is 34 centimeters high and 27.5 centimeters wide. It weighs 1041 kilograms.
There are some damages, mainly along the edges.
Origin unknown, Russian? Period unknown, 19th century?
