The Dutch East India Company (VOC) was the world's first multinational. Its capital was raised through the issue of shares. In the 17th century it contributed to the 'Golden Age' and the prosperity of the Republic. In the course of the 18th century it became increasingly unprofitable, and in 1796 the company went bankrupt due to enormous debts.
