Description from the seller

Beautiful sculpture depicting the head of Emperor Marcus Aurelius from the second century AD. The work was created using ancient sculpting techniques with Carrara marble dust.
The work was found in the ancient Roman city of Tarraco (Tarragona today in Spain). This bust represents Emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius. Successor of Antoninus Pius, he marked the so-called Golden Age of the Roman Empire, reigning from 161 to 180 AD. His historical philosophical education enabled him to confront a challenging reign, characterized by invasions, epidemics, and betrayals by his generals. He implemented administrative reforms to benefit the most needy sectors of society. During the harsh military campaigns, he wrote his philosophical work in Greek, 'Meditations'.
The original piece is kept at the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, in Spain, in the ancient Roman city.
