Amlash greyware spouted vessel with a globular body on a raised circular base, a long tubular spout from the shoulders, and two pierced lugs, in good condition and dating to the circa 1st Millennium BC, dimensions 14.8 cm by 11 cm by 12.5 cm, provenance includes private collection and ex. specialist Near Eastern pottery collection, London, from the 1990s, acquired in 2025.
Description from the seller
A finely modelled Amlash greyware vessel, featuring a globular body sitting upon a slightly raised, circular base. A long, tubular spout extends from the shoulders on one side. There are two pierced lugs, one at the junction where the spout and the shoulder meets, and the other on the opposite side across the vessel's mouth with a slightly everted rim. Both perforations of the lugs and the spout are now blocked by earthly encrustations. Signs of wear, such as minor scratches and pitting, to the surface.
The term ‘Amlash Culture’, has generally been used to designate material cultures excavated at Gilan, an archaeological site on the southern shore of the Caspian sea, and refers to a group of Iron Age pottery and metal executions with a strong visual character. Most of the Amlash pottery vessels are believed to have been stylistically and typologically inspired by bronze wares of the same period. Terracotta vessels of this type were clearly designed as pouring vessels, but they might have been used in a particular funerary ritual and ceremonial occasion.
Measurements: L 14.8cm x W 11cm x H 12.5cm
Provenance: Ex. specialist Near Eastern pottery collection, London, 1990s.
