Description from the seller
Antique tabernacle – gilded wood – richly decorated – circa early 20th century
Very fine and authentic ecclesiastical tabernacle, originating from the Roman Catholic tradition. This tabernacle served as a House of God: the repository for the consecrated hosts, also known as the Holy Reserve. The object exudes calm, reverence, and craftsmanship and forms an impressive religious and historical work of art.
Description
The tabernacle is made of wood and richly finished with gilded and painted panels. The double doors are adorned with refined, symmetrical decoration featuring floral motifs in gold, green, and warm red/orange. At the top of the doors sits the IHS monogram (Christogram), while at the center the symbols Alpha (Α) and Omega (Ω) are placed, referring to Christ as the beginning and the end.
The interior is austere yet ceremonially executed. The walls are clad in light, soft fabrics in cream and beige tones, flanked by white draperies with a narrow gold-colored fringe at the bottom. The upper portion is draped, giving a subtle canopy-like effect. Over the years there have been discolorations and spots, in keeping with the age and authentic character (see photos).
The floor is clad with a light-colored, sailcloth-like material, tightly and smoothly applied. This provides a practical and protective surface that nicely contrasts with the textile upholstery of the walls.
The opening is framed by a gold-coloured frame, which harmoniously connects to the gilded inner side of the doors. Taken as a whole, the interior appears understated, dignified and serene.
Function and meaning
A tabernacle (literally: tent) is the place where the consecrated hosts are kept, so that Holy Communion can be distributed outside Mass as well, for example to the sick. In the church, traditionally beside the tabernacle burns the Godslamp, a red light that indicates that Christ is present.
