Beautiful cross from the Amhara region of Ethiopia. The cross is handmade and unique. The oldest crosses are sometimes over 1,000 years old. Alloys with other metals have been found since the 18th century. From the 19th century onward, silver was increasingly used in such alloys.
Main features
Material and Manufacture: The cross depicted is likely made of a copper alloy such as brass or bronze. Many of these crosses are handmade using the lost-wax method (lost-wax casting) or by sawing from sheet metal.
Design: Ethiopian crosses are known for their intricate, grid-like patterns; no two crosses are exactly identical. This interweaving symbolizes eternal life.
Function: Processional crosses have a hollow shaft at the bottom so they can be mounted on a long wooden pole to be carried above the heads of the faithful during ceremonies.
Symbolism: In the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, the cross is seen as a symbol of victory over evil and an instrument of healing and protection, rather than simply a symbol of the death of Christ.
