Posters 1960-1988
Catalogue of the exhibition "Plakate von Gunter Rambow", Museum Wiesbaden (22 November 1988 – 29 January 1989).
Gunter Rambow (born in 1938) is an influential German graphic designer and photographer, considered one of the fathers of contemporary European design. He is best known for his conceptual posters that use everyday objects and black-and-white photography to convey powerful social and political messages.
Rambow's work stands out for the masterful use of documentary photography and photomontage. Image Manipulation: He often cuts, burns, or rearranges photographs to create surreal images that challenge the viewer's perception. Recurring Symbolism: The potato is one of his most iconic symbols, used not as decoration but as a reminder of the difficulties of postwar Germany. Minimalism: His posters minimize text and color (often limited to single color accents) to let the image speak for itself.
According to Rambow, design should not be mere decoration ('tinsel'), but must have a socially meaningful basis. His works are exhibited in prestigious permanent collections, including the MoMA in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
