Description from the seller
Vintage English EPNS Silver-Plated Hinged Scallop Shell Mustard Pot / Condiment Server – Spoon Notch, Blue Cabochon, England, 1950s–1970s – 127g
This is a delightful vintage English silver-plated hinged scallop shell condiment server (most likely a mustard pot or small covered butter/condiment dish), crafted in the classic mid-century style with intricate radiating fluted ribs mimicking a natural seashell, scalloped edges, a secure hinged lid, and a central blue cabochon (glass or simulated pearl) accent on the lid for elegant nautical charm.
Notably, it includes a small side notch/hole for resting a spoon or butter knife— a practical feature typical of mustard pots or spread servers to keep the utensil handy and contained.
Material: Electro Plated Nickel Silver (EPNS), clearly stamped "EPNS ENGLAND" (hallmark for British electroplated wares, often from Sheffield factories for export markets in the mid-20th century) and other unclear marks.
Dimensions: 12.5 cm × 12 cm × 5.5 cm (closed).
Weight: 127 grams – solid and substantial, reflecting good-quality construction and thick plating.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition; bright, well-preserved silver plating
Origin and period: England (likely Sheffield, the epicenter of EPNS production), circa 1950s–1970s
Shell-form condiments were trendy in post-war Britain for table settings—often as mustard pots (frequently paired with blue accents/liners), butter servers, or caviar dishes.
The hinged design with spoon notch aligns closely with mustard or spread servers from this era, adding functionality and collectible appeal.
Shipment: It will be packed with special care and tracked
