Early 20th‑century walking cane with a bamboo core wrapped in stitched leather, forming a contoured handle and shaft, 89 cm high, originating from the United Kingdom, in fair condition with heavy wear and possible minor parts missing.
Description from the seller
An early 20th-century walking cane with a bamboo core covered in stitched leather, forming a smoothly contoured handle and shaft. The leather covering follows the natural taper of the cane and is hand-stitched along its length, a construction method associated with practical, durable canes intended for everyday use rather than purely decorative purposes. The bamboo structure beneath provides lightness and flexibility, while the leather exterior adds grip and protection.
The cane shows clear signs of age and prolonged use, with a strong rustic character, showing honest wear, surface cracking and patina consistent with age. The leather covering displays pronounced wear, scuffs, losses to the finish and areas of abrasion, particularly along the handle and lower shaft. Stitching remains visible but shows wear and slight separation in places. The bamboo beneath shows through in areas, with patina, discoloration and wear consistent with age. The tip shows heavy wear from contact with the ground. Overall, the cane is in fair antique condition, with strong visual character and untouched, authentic wear throughout.
This is an authentic, unrestored example of an early 20th-century walking cane, valued for its combination of bamboo and leather and for the clearly preserved traces of long use. Its strong rustic character and honest, untouched wear make it particularly appealing to collectors, as well as a distinctive decorative object with genuine period presence.
