An EPNS silver-plated antique neoclassical Sheffield trophy with lid, dating from 1920–1950, measuring 37 cm high, 26 cm wide and 15 cm in diameter, made in the United Kingdom, featuring decorative embossing and a figurine atop the lid.
Description from the seller
The item up for auction is a classic decorative trophy with a lid, made in the renowned silversmithing center of Sheffield in England. The trophy features a traditional form with vertical fluting of the body and an impressive figurine crowning the lid.
Item details:
Material: EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) – high-nickel brass, electrochemically silver-plated.
Origin: Sheffield, United Kingdom (signature on the bottom).
Construction: a two-handled goblet on a tall foot, included with a matching lid.
Decoration: The body of the trophy and the lid feature decorative embossing; the handles have an ornate, scroll-like profile. The finial on the lid is a cast figurine of a figure in classical attire.
Behavior and defects:
The item bears natural signs of use and the passage of time, which give it an authentic antique character. Please review the following notes:
Patina and discoloration: The surface shows natural patina and darker spots/film buildup (professional cleaning may be required if a high gloss is preferred).
Scratches: The surface has numerous micro-scratches resulting from cleaning and use.
Condition of the figurine: The figurine at the top is intact, but it has visible casting irregularities and wear to the details of the face and robes.
Bottom: There are visible traces of tarnish and dirt, as well as a small irregularity.
Signature on the bottom: "E.P.N.S. WITH HARDENED METAL FITTINGS SHEFFIELD"
Why is it worth it?
The trophy presents itself with remarkable dignity and will be an excellent adornment for a study or living room, or a valuable addition to a Sheffield plate collection. Despite minor imperfections, the construction is stable, and the form is very striking.
