Description from the seller
GENERAL:
A solid base for renovation or restoration according to each buyer’s expectations: this Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is a rolling project. The car is functional in its current state, with a well-running engine and a smooth automatic gearbox. No abnormal noises during driving, brakes effective, exhaust in good condition and no major leaks observed. Overall presentation is correct, ideal for an enthusiast wanting to start from a healthy foundation.
BODYWORK & PAINT:
The body presents a flattering appearance with a repaint done a few years ago. However, there are various scratches, notably at the hard top location, as well as a few light dents on the sides. Small bubbles of rust are visible on the left rear wing.
The alignment of openings (doors, hood, boot) is good and no major corrosion is apparent. The front and rear members appear healthy. The floors and sills have been treated and generally look in acceptable condition. The trim strips are present but sometimes deformed or poorly fixed. The original chrome is in good condition without being perfect. The door seals need replacing. For a high-level restoration, work will be required, but not urgent.
MECHANICAL:
The vehicle is equipped with the famous 2.8L inline-six engine with double overhead cam, paired with an automatic transmission. Although stored for several years, the car remains drivable. The engine starts well when cold and hot, oil pressure is correct, it does not overheat and shows no significant leaks.
The automatic gearbox shifts normally and smoothly. No abnormal axle or bearing noise while driving. For regular use, the four tires (old) should be replaced and a complete service should be performed. An oil change has been done. The odometer shows 200,000 km and is functional. Most electrical equipment works, except for the ventilation. Only one key is available. The car offers healthy behavior and an expressive engine.
INTERIOR:
The cabin is the area needing the most attention. The seats, in faux leather and fabric, have been reupholstered but are now worn. They do not have tears but show wear. The carpeting is discolored and should be replaced for a nice presentation.
The woodwork is in poor condition and some plastic elements are damaged, notably under the steering wheel. One door panel is also in poor condition. The convertible top is out of service and must be replaced, as well as its frame, which is in poor condition. The hard top is present but needs restoration (rear window cracked, headlining damaged). The whole remains usable but requires renovation to reach a good level.
DOCUMENTS:
The vehicle has an American Title, a French customs clearance certificate (846A) with VAT paid, and an FFVE certificate for registration as a collectible in France. A professional invoice and a bill of sale will be issued to the buyer.
PICK-UP:
The vehicle can be viewed by appointment in the Alpes-Maritimes (06600), France. On-site pick-up. Delivery possible to neighboring countries, at an additional cost.
OTHER INFORMATION:
This 280 SL represents a very good restoration base, already running and globally sound. Ideal for a project to customize or restore according to your requirements, while enjoying an iconic car with strong potential.
