Description from the seller
This is an authentic Japanese natural finishing whetstone sourced from the Umegahata area, Kyoto Prefecture, one of the most historically respected regions for high-grade natural sharpening stones.
The stone shows classic Uchigumori (巣板) characteristics, visible in the layered structure and natural patterning across the surface. These stones are traditionally used for the final finishing stage of Japanese blades, where sharpness, edge refinement, and cutting feel are critical.
With an estimated grit range of #10,000–#12,000, this stone is well suited for professional use on Japanese kitchen knives, woodworking tools, and edged tools, delivering a refined, clean edge with excellent feedback.
The hardness is rated 4.5 / 5, offering a stable surface with minimal slurry generation. It can be used effectively without a nagura stone, making it practical for experienced sharpeners who prefer direct stone-to-blade contact.
No problematic lines or cracks affecting performance are observed. Natural inclusions are present and typical for genuine stones of this type, but they do not interfere with sharpening performance.

Why This Stone Matters
Natural finishing stones from Kyoto are no longer actively quarried in the traditional sense, making each genuine piece increasingly scarce. Stones from the Umegahata / Nakayama lineage are especially sought after by professional sharpeners and collectors for their balance of refinement, feedback, and cutting performance.
This piece is ideal for users who value authentic Japanese sharpening tradition and demand precise, controlled finishing results.
