Antique dough chest of pine wood dating from 1850–1900, in a Salvaged style, in good used condition with small signs of age and spots, dimensions 60.5 × 41 × 23 cm.
Description from the seller
Very decorative dough chest. The dough chest probably dates from the second half of the 19th century and comes from Europe. Probably that is the Netherlands, but it could also be Belgium, France, or Germany.
The dough box is made of spruce. It is 23 cm high, the long side is 60.5 cm long and the box is 41 cm deep. The box has the slanted sides that are so typical for a dough box, and very beautiful are the truly artisanal dovetail joints with which the four sides are connected. These dovetail joints (see photos) are very sturdy connections, because the wooden slats are already held together by them and are hard to come apart. The joints of this box were certainly made by a craftsman, because they are still very precise and neat!
In a dough box, dough was often laid out to rise. Sometimes dough was also kneaded in it. On every farm there was usually a dough box, and certainly in a bakery, though they were somewhat larger there. Sometimes the dough boxes had a lid, but very often not, and they were covered with a cloth when there was dough in them.
The chest is, of course, used, but still looks very good. It is also particularly sturdy and stable. It is a very decorative piece of folk art and antiques, but it is still very functional. You can store toys, newspapers, magazines, or other items in it, and it is also very suitable to use as a firewood chest beside a fireplace.
The crate is carefully packed and insured for shipment.
