Description from the seller

Lega statuette (DRC) – two-headed figure – Bwami tradition (attributed)

Rare and very beautiful sculpture attributed to the Lega, remarkable for its treatment with multiple heads, a formal vocabulary well known in the Bwami universe. Here, the sculptor signs a work of rare intelligence: a main head, powerful and perfectly balanced, extended by a second rear head, like a Janus figure, and a third small effigy carried on the chest. This superposition of faces creates a reading that is both hieratic and deeply symbolic, evoking vigilance, knowledge and authority.

The piece also seduces with its patina: dark, deep, gleaming in places, with beautiful areas of wear and lighter highlights at the level of the faces. The traces of handling and the remnants of ligatures/pigments (notably around the neck and the waist) reinforce the idea of a “lived-in” object, integrated into use and into a history.

A sculpture with character, very 'collectible', at once classic in its Lega idiom and exceptional in its construction, ideal for a Central African art enthusiast in search of a bold piece, instantly recognizable.

Based in Belgium, our appraisal and sales house has been assisting collectors and families for many years, with a simple approach: seriousness, transparency and service. We enjoy a solid reputation among tribal art enthusiasts and are among the leading sellers on Catawiki, where we count ourselves among the oldest merchants (more than 8 years).

We have specialized in valuing and ensuring the liquidation and dispersion of dozens of family collections, and have sold thousands of objects in partnership with private individuals, notaries, estates, inheritances, and collection cessations. Our track record speaks for itself: hundreds of evaluations nearing 100% positive feedback, an indicator that is worth more than any discussion of our commitment and reliability.

Pieces that have passed through our hands are today in prestigious collections and, for some, have joined museum institutions — a guarantee of the quality and consistency of our selection throughout the year. We regularly offer no-reserve sales.
