Description from the seller
South African photographer Zanele Muholi (born 1972) offers an unflinching portrait of the lives, politics and aesthetics of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community in South Africa and beyond. As a lesbian and human rights activist, Muholi uses her photographs to raise awareness about the LGBTQIA+ community in a country where violence against gays is commonplace.
Although her perspective is highly radical and provocative, it is simultaneously filtered through a truly intense, lucid and profoundly tender gaze. The book gives an overview of Muholi's work to date (2012), from the early Only Half the Picture to her ongoing Faces and Phases series, with essays by Muholi, Gail Smith, and editors Sandra Maunac and Mónica Santos.
This is the first title in a series of books, directed by Masasam and promoted by Casa Africa, aimed at promoting the most outstanding African women photographers, and specifically those who have won the Casa Africa Award at the Bamako African Photography Biennial.
The book contains photos from the series:
Only Half the Picture
Being
Beulahs
Portraits of Self
Massa and Minah
Faces and Phases
