Wooden command baton from Congo of the Songye people, featuring an elegantly carved female figure on top, with a 76 cm height and 7 cm width, in good condition with some age-related wear and stains.
Description from the seller
In African art, and more specifically the Songye corpus, staffs are symbols of royal authority associated with leaders.
This scepter bears at its summit an elegantly sculpted feminine figure.
The handle of the staff, for its part, is adorned with faces reminiscent of the masks produced by Songye sculptors. The figure could represent an ancestor or, in the manner of the usual Asian figures, be the ultimately aesthetic receptacle intended to house a spirit that would thereby grant its benevolence to the dignitary and to his subjects. This type of regal object was used during ceremonies and, at times, during dances. This is a remarkable piece that will delight any admirer of extraordinary objects and refined pieces.
