Nineteenth‑century mahogany and Verd Antique marble nightstand from France, in the Neo‑Renaissance (Henri II) style, ca. 1850–1900, with floral carved motifs, dimensions 86 cm high, 44 cm wide, 35 cm deep, and weight 18 kg; good condition with age-related wear and stains.
Description from the seller
Nightstand with floral motif in mahogany & Verde Antique marble.
* Origin
Of French origin, probably from provincial workshops (Brittany, Normandy or regions around Paris) or Parisians. The carved motifs (gadroons, floral rosettes) evoke an influence of the Italian Renaissance adapted to the bourgeois French style of the 19th century. Many similar examples are attributed to France.
* Period and style
End of the 19th century (around 1870–1900), in the neo-Renaissance style (or Renaissance Revival, known in France as the Henri II style). It is a revival of 16th-century motifs with turned columns, gadroons (scalloped borders) and floral reliefs, adapted to Victorian or Belle Époque production. The compact dimensions and weight correspond to bourgeois nightstands of that period.
* materials;
- walnut (walnut), for sculpted façades, with a dark brown patinated finish.
- marble
Plate in Verd Antique (Verde Antique), a green serpentine veined with irregular white, originating from Greece or Italy, imported into France in the 19th century. This metamorphic material (not a pure calcareous marble) is durable and luxurious, chosen for its antique appearance and its resilience.
- Bedside table (nightstand) or a small supplementary piece of furniture for the bedroom, with practical storage.
The marble is in very good condition.
The bottom plate is stained & has a slight crack ( see photos.
