Description from the seller
Italian Upholstered Footstool, Selva, Late 20th Century
This upholstered footstool combines restrained Italian design with functional ergonomic consideration. The solid wooden frame supports a rectangular padded seat upholstered in deep blue patterned fabric, resting on tapered square legs with subtle stepped detailing.
Manufacturer and origin
Selva, Italy. The original underside fabric is printed “SELVA – Made in Italy,” confirming manufacturer and origin.
Year of production
Circa 1980–1990.
Style and function
Designed as a footstool or low occasional seat for use with armchairs or sofas. The form and materials correspond to late 20th-century Italian interior furniture focused on comfort and balanced proportions.
Dimensions
Width 61 cm
Depth 46 cm
Seat height: 39 cm (lower side), 43 cm (higher side)
Condition
Good overall condition. Upholstery is structurally sound with light surface wear consistent with age. The wooden frame and legs show minor handling marks. No structural looseness or instability observed.
Value justification
Confirmed Selva manufacture provides clear provenance and distinguishes this piece from unbranded decorative stools. Selva furniture from this period is recognized for consistent craftsmanship and practical design. The survival of the original underside lining and intact construction supports both functional use and collector interest.
Ergonomic design analysis
The difference in seat height between the two sides is consistent with intentional ergonomic design rather than deformation or wear. The seat maintains a uniform, gently inclined plane, and all four legs remain structurally even, with no signs of shortening or warping.
Such asymmetry allows the user to rest the feet at a more natural angle, reducing ankle tension and improving comfort during prolonged seated use. This approach reflects late 20th-century Italian design priorities, where subtle functional refinement was integrated without altering the visual clarity of the form.
Preservation
Original upholstery, original underside fabric, and natural wood patina retained.
