Hacha, man's head
Culture Veracruz, Gulf Coast, Mexico
Classical, 450-650 AD
Gray-green volcanic stone with a slightly rough surface.
H. 16.5 cm, base 26 cm

Head of a man with half-closed eyes framing a small nose with dilated nostrils. Lip-shaped mouth from which the tongue protrudes in high relief. Skull decorated with three aligned spheres, one behind the other, resembling chignons or perhaps wigs made of cotton balls. At the back, a small angular tenon allows the axe to be fixed within an architecture.
