Description from the seller
Baroque ivory Corpus Christi – 17th/18th century
Beautiful and impressive antique ivory Corpus Christi, executed in high-quality ivory and of substantial size. The Corpus measures 29 cm high and 20 cm wide. Total height with the cross 43 cm.
This corpus shows Christ in a powerful Baroque, expressive pose, with a strongly tilted head, half-open mouth and refined facial expression that poignantly depicts the moment of suffering and surrender. The anatomy is carefully and naturalistically worked out: visibly tensed chest, subtly modeled muscles and a natural S-curve of the body.
The perizoma (loincloth) is rich and asymmetrically pleated, with a beautiful textile effect typical of high-quality Baroque ivory sculpture. Hair and beard are finely cut and contribute to the lively expression.
With a height of no less than 29 cm this corpus belongs to the larger and rarer segment of ivory devotional images. Such sizes were expensive to manufacture and were usually ordered for church or monastic use, or by very wealthy private patrons.
Carved from solid ivory, with visible natural patina and age-related discoloration
Smooth polished finish, with clear manual cutting marks
Arms individually made and attached, as is customary with large corpora
Original nail holes in hands and feet present
This very fine piece is delivered with an EU CITES certificate and an additional expert statement.
NO Shipping outside the EU.
