Scheelite belongs to the scheelite mineral group, together with wulfenite, powellite, and stolzite. Although they are all rare as gemstones, scheelites are in fact the most commonly faceted minerals of the group.
The mineral is a calcium tungstate with the formula CaWO4. It represents the tungsten-dominant end member of a series of minerals, together with powellite, the molybdenum-dominant end member.
The simplest identification is provided by the fluorescence of scheelite. Most natural stones exhibit a strong and distinctive blue fluorescence, although it can also be white or yellow. The latter colors are characterized by a greater presence of molybdenum.
