Tokyo Nude

Kishin Shinoyama
Asahi Press/1990/japanese/268*373*15

Tokyo Nude (With OBI), a collection of works by Kishin Shinoyama, one of Japan's leading photographers. From the 1970s to the 1980s, Nobuyoshi Araki teamed up with Akira Suei to dominate the scene with publications like ‘Weekend Super’ and the wildly popular ‘Photo Era’. Meanwhile, Shinoyama achieved success with his gravure series ‘Gekisha’, featuring models, idols, and actresses, which led to the creation of photography magazines centered around him, such as ‘Sharaku’. Alongside his commercial work, Shinoyama's defining 80s project was “Shinorama.” True to its name—a blend of Shinoyama's name and “panorama”—this technique employed multiple cameras to capture subjects from multiple perspectives. This technique proved ideal for capturing the rapidly changing (major) cities of the 1980s, and Shinoyama released works set in New York and Tokyo. This is ‘Tokyo Nude’, which could be called the “Tokyo version of Shinorama,” blending urban landscapes with female nudes to lay bare the city of Tokyo. Includes obi.
