Beautiful gold-filled (doublé) pocket-watch chain with a rose-gold sheen, hanging from the chain a gold-filled clasp set with a small opal.
Made circa 1890–1910, Pforzheim region, Germany.
Chain dimensions: 128 cm long x 0.2 cm wide.
Flower-shaped chain clasp, size: 11 mm diameter.
Small opal, approx. 2 mm in diameter.

From around 1870, in Pforzheim they began producing doublé-rolled plates according to a new process; a collaboration among the largest producers of doublé jewelry emerged, including Rodi & Wienerberger, Speidel, Andreas Daub, and A. Odenwald.
From 1890 to 1900, these large companies began to specialize in the new method for producing jewelry with "rolled" or rolled gold (Doublé), and their name thereby became internationally established.
On a double-pressed tombak plate, first a layer of silver was cast, then a thin layer of gold was rolled on twice, after which the plates were taken to the ateliers for the manufacture of jewelry.
After the creation of a piece of jewelry, it is carefully polished with a guarantee of lifelong gold luster, as seen in this necklace with a clasp!
The typically long doublé chains were used to hang pocket watches, but ladies also made clever use of them by wearing these chains around their necks with chain clasps.
Among the less well-off, who could not afford precious metal jewelry, these necklaces were a boon and very popular!
The antique Doublé jewelry is now sporadically found and is extremely collectible!
