Bronze Brutalist tray designed by David Marshall, made in Spain in the 1970s–1980s, with a smooth dark central surface and a rough textured edge, dimensions 18 cm wide by 14 cm deep by 3 cm high, in good used condition with signs of age and imperfections, and with the maker's mark and signature on the back.
Description from the seller
The brutalist brass tray, a piece created by David Marshall, a designer and sculptor who produced most of his work in Spain since the late sixties.
The piece combines a smoother, darker central surface with an edge of rough, irregular texture, almost as if it had been ripped from a mineral formation.
That contrast between the polished and the organic is one of the most recognizable features of his work.
On the back appear both the stamp and the author's signature, something common in his pieces, since Marshall insisted that every object be unique and retain an artisanal character. His works from the late 20th century, such as this tray, fully showcase his aesthetic language: bold forms, noble materials, and an approach that blurs the boundary between functional object and sculpture.
David Marshall, born in Scotland and based in the Granada Alpujarra, worked mainly with bronze, brass and aluminum. His style is associated with brutalism by the presence of pronounced textures, heavy volumes and a finish that celebrates the raw material. His trays, candelabras, frames and sculptures have become highly prized pieces by collectors of 20th-century author-design.
Certified shipping and good packaging.
