Description from the seller
Jimmy Katz (), Jazz Katz, 2007.
Photo book, 33 x 30 cm. Signed, dedicated, hardcover edition. Bad Oeynhausen.
Provenance: Private collection, Berlin.
Condition: Good, used condition. Photos are part of the condition description.
Jimmy Katz’s first published jazz book provides an impressive glimpse into his extensive photo archive and features numerous photographs that have largely remained unpublished until now. Among them are photographs of musical greats such as Ornette Coleman, Joe Lovano, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Roy Haynes, Wynton Marsalis, Lee Konitz, Dave Brubeck, Cassandra Wilson, Ray Charles, Sting, and more. The images were taken during recording sessions in studios in New York, in jazz clubs, and in the artists’ private environments.
The Blue Note producer Michael Cuscuna counts Jimmy Katz among the great legends of jazz photography and places him in a line with Francis Wolff, Herman Leonard, William Gottlieb and William Claxton. Katz is regarded as a worthy successor to Francis Wolff—not because of his connection to Blue Note, but due to his extraordinary combination of technical perfection and great sensitivity toward the musicians portrayed. Especially his photographs of artists in their private homes reveal an authentic and personal side.
