Leather travel trunk dating from the interwar period (circa 1920–1940), manufactured in Guangzhou for export to Europe, in good used condition with some wear to leather and corners, features original fittings and a blind stamp with Chinese characters and a K R L sticker, dimensions 70 cm wide, 41 cm deep, 21 cm high, colour dark brown, model Interbellum Hutbagage, brand Cuangzhou, includes original label and Rotterdamsche Lloyd paperwork.
Description from the seller
Very beautiful and authentic leather travel case from the interwar period (circa 1920–1940), manufactured in Guangzhou (Canton), China, for export to Europe.
The case bears a blind stamp with Chinese characters and a sailing ship. The text mentions among others:
廣州製造 – Made in Guangzhou
皮革製品 – Leather goods
On the side there is an original paper label from Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd N.V., Rotterdam, marked Hutbagage / Cabin Baggage. This clearly places the case in the context of ocean travel in the 1920s–30s, presumably on the Netherlands – Netherlands Indies route.
On the top is the name “E.Verlinden”, probably the original owner.
Features:
Fully leather with a beautiful patina
Original brass locks and central clasp
Craftsman leather reinforcements.
Original Rotterdamsche Lloyd label present.
Blind stamp with Chinese export marking
Condition:
Good, original condition consistent with age. Normal signs of use and wear on leather and corners, which contribute to the authentic character. No modern restorations undertaken. Only four new split pins on the side closures.
Historical context:
This case is a tangible example of intercontinental trade and passenger transport in the interwar period – a combination of Chinese production and Dutch maritime history.
