Description from the seller
Kusu sculpture, originating from the southeastern-central region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, stands out for its expressiveness and symbolic strength. Carved mainly in wood, the figures often depict standing or seated characters, with elongated bodies and well-defined volumes. The faces feature pronounced traits: a bulging forehead, almond-shaped eyes sometimes inlaid, and protruding mouths. Scarifications and elaborate hairstyles emphasize cultural identity and social status.
These sculptures are not merely aesthetic objects. They play a role in ritual contexts related to protection, healing, or the assertion of authority. Some figures, associated with initiatory societies, served as spiritual supports and concentrated a symbolic force aimed at preserving the community. Through their presence, they express the link between the visible and the invisible, between ancestors and the living, revealing a conception of power deeply rooted in the sacred.
