The emblem was originally the personal symbol of Count Francesco Baracca, the Italian air ace who painted a rearing horse on the fuselage of his fighter aircraft. After his death in 1918, the symbol was forever linked to his heroic memory.

Years later, Enzo Ferrari would recall the pivotal moment that would give new life to the horse. After winning a race on the Savio circuit, he met the aviator's parents, who urged him to use the emblem on his automobiles as a symbol of good fortune.

On July 9, 1932, at the 24 Hours of Spa, the Alfa Romeo of Scuderia Ferrari wore the Prancing Horse for the first time. The horse that once swept the skies began then to gallop on four wheels.
